Default Do-it-yourself Short Shifter mod ....

I test drove a GT one day and noticed right away how much shorter the shaft on the shifter was and I wanted my V6 shifter like that. Instead of spending $200-$300 on a shorty shifter I cut about an inch off the stock shifter. I had to grind off the lip on the shaft so the shift handle would drop down but it definitely resembles the GT shifter now. Here is a before and after. Notice originally the shifter was up past the bottom of the radio cutout. Now it sits below the cutout and there is no interference in 1st, 3rd or 5th ....

OK, let me get the hacksaw and grinder out. Be back in a while with the results.
Keep them super mods coming.

I love home made mods.....Do you notice any additional percieved notchiness with the loss of leverage??

Nice........

Wow, I must say that I'm surprised how good that looks. Nice job.

I don't notice any difference if shift qaulity ... or lack there of .... however ... I can tell it will be a little tricker to shift with a beverage in the couple holder now!

Didn't you just cut off the part that the shiftknob screws to?
how did you connect the shift **** back to the shaft?

I wondered about that. I go to Sonic so often for drinks I practically just pull up and say 'the usual!' and they hop me out my drink. So I'd say 80% of the time I'm driving there's a drink in my cupholder closest to my console...I'd hate that my elbow would be running into it rather than clearing it (or almost clearing it)like it does now.

Oh, plus I'm lazy and when drive with my hand resting on the shifter it's at the perfect level to hit FF to the next song on my CD...all I have to do is stretch out a finger

Shortening my shifter would screw all my astethics up!! ha ha

That said, way to take matters into your own hands though to do your own mod. Awesome! and FREE!!

OK, I got it cut off and ground down. Its shorter like a GT
but I now cant navigate the radio buttons as well as before
resting my arm on the shifter. Anyone have a stock unmodified
V6 shifter laying around so I can go back to stock?

Hell no! No food rule in my car has been strictly enforced since day one. A lidded drink is as safe as a capped one. Never had a spill yet *knock on wood*

I have kids and it has killed them to not be able to eat or drink in my car but I'm the only one allowed a drink and NO food is ever eaten in my car.
