If you go to your local autozone/kragens/napa you should be able to rent a spring compressor. That's all you need as far as special tools.
I did my springs with hand tools and a torque wrench - I wouldn't recommend skipping the spring compressor part (you'll need it when taking of the factory springs) but it can be done!
I doubt you'd need to spend $500 for a $130 set of springs.
However, I do recommend holding off if you plan on upgrading shocks/struts. In fact I don't think you should waste your time on the old shocks/struts when adjustable ones are by far more superior. But it's been done.

I also just put mine on with standard/metric wrenches and socket sets plus a torque wrench. I got the spring compressor from Autozone which cost me nothing, just a $40 deposit.
I agree with danbevsv6rumbler. You should wait to put the new springs on at the same time as new shocks/struts. I thought I could manage with the stock shocks/struts for awhile. I installed the springs in July and bought new shocks/struts last week. Ride was sooooo harsh. I know its tough when you get new parts and you want to slap them on but it's weel worth the wait.

thanks guys, I guess I'll wait. I'm a neewb, so what does shocks/struts do? are you guys referring to this in the frpp handling package?

sure. but for that price you might as well pay the extra $150 to upgrade to these:
2 Front struts:

2 Rear Shocks:

I run these and the ability to adjust rebound/compression really helps me dial in good setups for daily driving and for track use. Plus it only takes like 5 minutes to adjust them to make them firm/soft depending on your application.
