lilbrudder,

You're MUCH better off swapping the entire axle rather than doing gears/t-loc. My total cost for swapping out the axle was under $900 ($745 inc. ship + $140 install). See the thread below for details:

3.73 user here. love the setup. make note however that it all depends on your intentions and what you want out of your car. make sure you figure that part out first then consider suggestions from others. most of us love our own setups but that is because we got what we wanted. you will get compliments from both setups but it really comes down to your driving style. good luck dude.

*does anyone know the weight difference between the 7.5 and 8.8 rear ends?

I think this is the way I wanna do it. But how on earth did you get the 8.8 with everything for 745 shipped? Is there a discount code for newtakeoff.com or v6mustangstuff?

Guys, you need to "think outside the box" a little when it comes to business dealings. I'm an engineer, but I was in sales for several years & learned to negotiate deals. When I call to place an order for hundreds of dollars I'm aware that I'm in control..it's I who decides if the vendor will get my business. Treat your purchases of after-market gear the same as you treated buying the car itself.. you wouldn't just pay the sticker would you?

All you need to do is simply remind the rep on the phone that he's only ONE of dozens of vendors from which you could choose and ASK "what kind of deal can you offer me to WIN my business?" That's capitalism at it's best.. recognize that the customer is the most important person in any business... without YOU there can be NO business.

The operators over at Newtakeoff are going to be like WTF? all of sudden people keep calling trying to dicker for the best price I already committed to another source for rearend, had I not I'd be calling them to see how much wiggle room they have. I'm sure even at 745 shipped they're making a nice buck off those parts.

As for the weight of the 7.5 vs 8.8 I saw an old post here claiming the 8.8 was 80lbs heavier. No clue what the 7.5 weighs. SpeedConcepts claims 200lb shipping weight on the 8.8. So is the 7.5 120lbs? Is the 8.8 really 80lbs heavier? That's a lot of unsprung weight. If the 8.8 is 200, my guess is the 7.5 is more like 160-170. If no one figures it out I'll weigh both of mine once the 8.8 gets here in a week or so.

I've got 410's on a manual car with FI, I get 17mpg avg city and 24 freeway. Mine is not a DD but if it was the gears would be fine, the manual would be a giant PIA though! As a weekend cruiser the combo is perfect for me. As for the rear end, I don't think the added weight of a 8.8 is warranted in an NA car, even with the 300 pounds of torque I generate I don't worry about breakage. There were a lot of guys (Regan, Ron, John) running 7.5 rear ends with a lot more power than I have and beat the holy hell out of them for several seasons at the strip before breaking them.

To those who ended up getting the 8.8, what did you do with your 7.5? Scrap it? Is it laying in the garage? Has anyone been able to sell it off?
