K&N Drop In Filter?
So then you've used the K&N drop in filter? Where'd you pick yours up from?
I had a drop in for a while and the only thing i really noticed was that my mpg increased by +1. There was a subtle change in the exhaust tone, but nothing really too significant. I think the biggest benefit of getting a K&N drop-in is just the fact that you will never have to replace it.
i've seen an improvement of 1-2 mpg on every car i've put one in. This includes a toyota celica, a chevy silverado, and a volkswagen passat. Haven't put one in the mustang because I got the xCharger.
I forgot to mention that it helped a lot with mileage. I drive 60 miles each way to and from work, so I like to do a little hypermiling, using the car's mileage computer to find the MPG sweet spot. With the stock filter, I was never able to get much above 27 MPG. With the K&N I can squeeze out a little more than 30 MPG. Also, the sweet spot with the K&N is at about 65 MPH, whereas with the stock filter it was at about 55. This seems like the only real significant advantage. That and the savings on replacement filters.
It's no CAI, but I wouldn't say it's a waste of money.

I dropped one in yesterday in my V-6 auto convertible. I noticed an immediate change in the sound of the engine. A lot of the V6 coarseness got smoothed out. There might be a very slight pickup in acceleration, but that might just be my imagination because the engine sounds smoother. I'll report back when I have some mpg comparisons.
Update: Before dropping in the K & N, I was able to get only 20 MPG in straight highway driving. In my first tankful after the filter, I had a whopping 25 mpg! I can hardly believe that my mileage could go up 25% on the filter alone. There must be other factors at work here, like slightly cooler weather. But in any case, my real world test of the filter showed that my engine ran smoother with better mpg. I say "Myth Confirmed."

I just bought one about a month or 2 ago. I bought it used but it looked brand new and the guy I bought it from said he only put a couple hundred miles on it. I bought mine from craigslist and got it for a deal of $25. I haven't noticed any difference in sound, performance or mpg. The main reason I wanted one was to save money in the long run of not having to replace it every time, just clean it. You could say it's my way of going "green"
