It would be better if your brother sold his 4.0 and bought a GT. There are good deals out there on used S197s that are still under warranty.
By converting the 4.0 you will not have Ford's back on your side if something goes wrong. It would totally void the warranty.

Good advice so far. It is far easier to bolt on an x-charger than swap the motor to a V8. That being said, as time goes on you will see more and more motor swaps with the S197. The car is solid, nice looking, and has a strong aftermarket. In 5 years these V6's will be dirt cheap. Folks who can turn a wrench will be dropping in 5.4L-3v motors from the F-150 and be able to run 12's N/A with that. Eco-Boost 3.5L's will also be a likely motor for a swap. Look how many 2.3L Fox Mustangs are being rebuilt now with powerful V8's. The same will happen with the V6 S197.

- 5.4L-2 valve (older truck motor)
- 5.4L-3v (current F-150 motor)
- 5.4L-4v (Shelby GT500 motor)
There's also a 5.4L-4v as used in the Ford GT that is different from the one used in the GT500. That list also does not consider any crate motors available through Ford Motorsports, or the 351cid motors from older Fords.
