Who owns a S197 V6 that also owned a 65'-73' Mustang
Ok, I'll get the ball rolling. Who owns a S197 V6 Mustang that also owned or currently owns a '64 1/2 to '73 Mustang.
When did you own it? Tell us a little bit about it.
My first car was a 1970 Sports Roof auto with 302 Windsor. Purchased it in 1976 for $1,200. I was 16 at the time making something like $2.20 an hour. It was white with factory vinyl top.
I poured all my spare change in to it. Mostly for looks with raised white letter F 70's on the front and F 60's on the rear sitting on American Racing slots. The engine was dressed up too. Mickey Thompson valve covers, chrome air cleaner, and orange spark plug wires. Add a glass pack muffler and it was ready to go.
I raced it twice on the back roads of Clayton County, GA against the same guy. 1st time he had a Torino with 351`auto and the second time was a Mustang II V6 with stick. I won both races. He later bought a 1977 Bandit Trans Am. I wouldn't race that. Better safe than sorry.
Sold the '70 Pony late in 1977 to by a brand spanking new Olds Starfire with 5.0L. Oh the memories.

i had a friend that had a 1972 .... was white with black stripes... a mach 1 or something, i dunno....
but he was banging this chick one time and he let me use his car to drive about 30 miles or so to take care of some stuff since he was "busy"
The drivers door would not open so you had to climb in the passenger side, other than that it was a very sweet ride... i drove the hell out of that thing. Sounded like something out of a horror movie when you kicked it and all hell would break lose and it showed no mercy on the tires of the gas gauge....
ahhh... memories
so with that said... my 07 doesnt compare at all in terms of raw power, but at least my drivers door will open

My first car was a black 1965 Mustang convertible that I bought for $50 in 1974. Had the 289, 4 barrel, and 3 speed stick. I had to tow the car home and spent a couple of weeks tearing down the engine and rebuilding and put a new clutch in it. I drove it all during college, kept it for a couple of years hoping to restore it, but finally gave up and sold it in 1978.
By that time the floor was completely rotted away and the car was sagging. The guy gave me $450 for it still.

My first car was a '67 Mustang coupe in pretty faded lime paint that I bought in 1978. Spent several years fixing it up, learned to weld replacing the quarter panels, learned to paint changing the color over to red, eventually had the full '68 Shelby nose and hood on it and '67 Shelby tail setup. The car was beautiful and I was very proud of having done the work myself.
Then in my early 20's I got ill. Very ill (nearly died) and had to sell the car to pay medical bills. That was hard enough, but unbeknownst to me the guy that bought it was an alcoholic and rather big on drinking and driving. For the next few years I got to see the 'stang around town occasionally, each time with a new smashed in door or fender or whatever... that was horrific, it was like watching a friend being beaten to death.

73 Stang
Still have my first Mustang, a '73 351C sportsroof I bought while in college for $150 in the very early 80's. The motor was blown and the rear quarter had tangled with an ice cream truck, paint was crap on the front end. After maybe a year I swapped in a tired 302 I got from my brother's friend I just had to pull it out of a '69 parts car he picked up. I used it as a daily driver and started accumulating parts for a restoration. A few years later I had a rebuilt and worked 302 ready to go and I found a guy to do the body work for me. I mismatched the newer rail style rocked arms with the early shorter valve length on the worked heads resulting in a swallowed valve. So next in was warmed up 351C. I showed the car a lot and drag raced it when I could. Fast forward a few more years and the floor pans and shock towers were showing serious stress cracks so I tore out the whole interior and engine compartment...and now some 10 years and 3 kids later that's how it still sits. My 7 year old son is looking forward to helping me get it back on the road so there is still hope. Problem is the new car is so much fun and there is only so much money and time to go around.
My wife still has her '86 GT she bought when we got married, I've owned lots of commuters: '84 4cyl Capri; '88 4cyl stang, '95 6cyl and now the '05 4.0.
Here's a pic of the '73 at e-town, NJ in the late 80's.

Had a new 65 Mustang and of course will never forget it and am sorry I traded it. Now own two S197 Mustangs and have learned the lesson so do not plan on getting rid of either one. Was reading a road test of the HiPo 289 engine from the 1960's and was surprised when they said the 0 to 60 time was only 8.3, with the quarter mile speed of 85mph in 15.9 seconds. Would have thought that for 271 horsepower the times would have been a little faster. Am wondering if the S197 V6 is equally fast?
