And if you bought the GT500 mufflers up to the 2010, then you have mufflers for an automatic. Ford used the stock automatic muffler for the GT500.

Well, I guess if Ford decided that the stock automatic muffler is good enough for the GT500...they're gonna be good enough for my lil' sixer.

I've been reading thread after thread, googling my a&& trying to understand exhaust options.....this is the first time someone has said there is a difference between mufflers from a manual or automatic GT.

Someone please provide some clarity.
Yep.

If yours are 7991 instead of 7849's, they came off an auto and are more restrictive and quieter.

OK...so I call two muffler shops today in my local area of Virginia. I inquire about installing my GT takeoffs as well as an X pipe. This old timer tells me that configuration is illegal in this state and that he would be subject to a $2,500 fine.

The next shop I called said he could install the mufflers and either an X pipe or H pipe, but he tells me frankly that unless I am running at 6,000 RPMs, the crossover (X or H) is absolutely useless. I told him about all these guys on this forum and how they boast of HP gains by converting the V6 single to duals. He said manufactures will want to make you believe that so you buy their products.....and the people talking about their HP gains by simply installing duals are fooling themselves. He goes on to say he has been doing muffler work for 30 years.

Well...don't shoot the messenger, I am just repeating what two muffler shops told me today. You would think that they would be happy to take my money and install the duals and let me go about my way...but instead one says its illegal and the other says there is nothing to gain except the difference in sound.

Lastly.....TPLSTNG....how do you know the Auto GT mufflers are more restrictive and quieter. Are you simply repeating something you heard elsewhere ....or is it your opinion....or do you know because you really know all about this stuff? I don't doubt you and I really don't care...I am installing them, I would just like to know how you can back that statement up.

OK, so since we are now certain you have the autos, what would you say now about the mufflers knowing what you now know and having run one for a while? I'm planning on doing the same thing and would like your opinion. Is it louder than the V6? Does it drone? Was it worth the swap? Have you noticed any performance improvements? I'm assuming it bolted right up to the V6 pipes without any modifications.

I guess as a new member of MF(got my six in August a birthday present to myself), I may not be the best to respond to this but I will try anyway. I haven't really seen or read any threads on this site about big HP gains from converting a stock sixer to a dual exhaust with an X or H pipe. Most members with more experience with the six say that any HP gain will be very minimal 1 to 3 HP or simply none at all. A conversion to duals to me is all about the sound. As far as I know if you want measurable HP gains look into cams, headers, S/C, turbos, nitrous and the like.

I only know about it because I researched it here. Someone posted pics of the guts of the two mufflers side by side and there was a huge difference in the amount of restriction. I think the poster may have been 157db. I just did a search and it looks like his links to the pics are outdated. Maybe he would repost them? Or if it wasn't him, maybe whoever it was can post a link to the pics. There are plenty of pics of the two side by side looking up the tailpipes that are still posted here and there is a difference.

The single GT auto muffler is a big improvement over the stock v6. Yes it is louder. Yes it has a little drone. No I have not noticed any performance or mileage improvements. It did bolt right up...just had one less hanger.
I just wish mine sounded as good as this...if it did I probably wouldn't mess with going to duals.

Maybe I can hear the little bit of drone because I have a ragtop instead of a coupe.
