Default Key Programming and other Questions

Hi All,

This morning I bought an 06 MT to my 16-year-old daughter. It will be a surprise my wife and I will have for her tonight when I get home from work, so I have a few questions:

1- What do I need to have in hand when we give her the surprise? First Aid kit? Have 911 ready on the speed dial? I think she's going to pass out when she sees her Thank god my wife is a nurse!

2- She came with only one key. I would like to have a spare key. What are my options? Or do I have to give the stealer the $120 they want for it?

3- She came with the Shaker stereo that holds I don't know how many CDs. The problem is that I don't think my daughter remembers what a CD looks like. Is there a way to connect an iPod to it?

Thanks for your help with my questions!

I can't wait to get home so my daughter can take me for a spin

Yes on the nurse and doctor i've seen some people pass out during this sort surprise

I would go to like a hardware store and just get a copy or two made

and i think there is a cable or something that you can buy for the stereo but im not an expert of this since i just replaced the whole deck in mine

im not sure about the 06's but in my 08 there is a little auxilary plug in the arm rest storage compartment. you can plug in an aux cable to that and then the other end to the headphone jack of your ipod. and about the spare dont they make keys nowadays with little coded transponders so you cant just make a physical copy?

If it's a coded key, you're likely stuck paying the dealer. I don't know of anyone else that could do it.

I have the Aux Plug and it works well for me.

On the key, I work for the city i live in... I started out supporting the computers of fire and police stations so I learned a couple of things. The one that applies here most firemen have other professions too. One of the Firemen is locksmith. I talked to him after I ordered my ford fusion key (it has the fob in the key) He told me if I only had one key that he could do it but he had to borrow the computer needed from the local locksmith association. I tell you this so you know someone other than the dealership can do it. finding them may be hard though and it takes about an hour from what I understand.

I tried to get mine done around the holidays (Late December) but between my vacation and his we never met up. I didn't want to be demanding because he was helping me out and not going to charge me. I keep meaning to link back up with him but haven't found the time yet.

Thanks for the replies.

How do I know if the key is coded or not?

I can't find the plug, but the unit has an "aux" button. Can the plug be added if it didn't come standard?

I THINK the plug came standard starting in '07.. but it MAY be on the '06.

When sitting in the driver's seat, lift up the center console arm rest and look inside, under the change holder spot, and next to the cig lighter adapter--the headphone jack should be right there.

If its not there, you would have to get an aftermarket headunit to swap your CD player/Radio and use the aux jack from there.

Its not the end of the world if she has to make some CD's again--even MP3's will work in the CD player (so you can stuff like 60+ songs on there)

No need to call 911, lol, Just make sure you have a camera/video camera ready to capture the excitement!

From what I could find Ford started the passive anti theft coding on 1996 models at least (just earliest I could find). So I would go ahead and assume it is.

As far as who can do it, I did find this sentence while reading
Have an auto lock specialist who has electronic programming equipment and is qualified to use it come to your vehicle and do the same.
(option 1 was dealer)... From this article- http://www.1-800-pdq-keys.com/news.htm

So SLCustomsGTCS must be right about some locksmiths having the programming equipment. Just need to find one and see if it's cheaper or not I guess. GL to you and your daughter.

Many locksmiths can create another programmed key for you. It'll cost less that a dealer, but still won't be cheap. I had one made last year, and I think it cost $35 to $50 or somewhere in that range.

The 2006 does NOT have the plug in the center console, that started with the 2007 model year. The AUX button on the Shaker doesn't control anything. There is a kit you can buy that will let you plug an iPod in, but as I recall it was causing problems for some people.

All Ford cars come with the chip in the key as part of the passive anti-theft system - there isn't anything you need to check to see if your car has the PATS, it does. You can't just get a blank key cut because it will only be good for opening the trunk. I had to go to the dealership to get a second key made and programmed when I lost one of my keys - none of the local locksmiths could make one.
