Default should I Flush

So I need a coolant flush. Ive never done one before, but i do want to learn. The only thing is I found a local shop that will do it for $40. For you that have done it, is it worth saving like $24. Not sure if the hassle is worth it.
Also do you guys use distilled water when you flush?

Oh and I got my car used, and Im not sure if the trans fluid has ever been done. How can I tell if I need it? FYI the car has 53K miles.

Its recommended to flush the oil at 30000 and then at 60,000 flush and change filter. I was under the impression that u have to have a special tool b/c ford made it so. And its the only way to insure that u get all the old oil out but im sure some guys will be chiming in to lead u in the write direction. Same thing with my gf's explorer. And that was coming from a local mechanics shop.

I would change ur filter when u do it

hahahaha....

So is it worth just getting it done at a shop for $40??
Is it a must to use distilled water? It seems no shops around here do it.

If it worries you (or the previous owner abused the cooling system somehow) then have it flushed. I wouldn't even consider it until at least 75,000 miles. $40 isn't bad for a shop to do it although you can probably do it yourself at about 1/3 the cost.

Tap water is fine IMO but nobody will stop you if you want to go buy however many jugs of distilled water you need.

If it's all brown and chunky it may be too late to just flush.
