is NOS bad for your car?
Ive been looking at a CAI n tune (american muscle) then I ran across a NOS system. Dont hear near as much talk about nos as I do tunes. Just wondering if its bad for your car or somthing? Seems for around the same cost you can get more then twice the HP.
youll need a tune for it anyway! so lesson learned dont short out, get a tune! but no, its not really good for it. think of it like this, your putting 100hp or over in a single instant. thats a huge stress for your internals.
Talk to U R 1 1 5 about nitrous... He blew his motor recently on a 130shot but he was running the wrong tune. If I were you and you are serious about getting it, you will need a specified tune for nitrous, a locking diff/8.8, and some other supporting mods here and there. Put it this way if you are on that stage of calling it "NOS" still you aren't ready for Nitrous my friend and it is a recipe for disaster for you.
The nitrous was a great track mod for me - but it did hit much harder than my supercharger does. I only went to a 75 shot, my tuner said he wouldn't recommend anything more than that on a stock 4.0. That was enough to put me in the 13's though.
It isn't something that you use on the street. Leaving it on all the time will be hard on the solenoids and likely will leak at some point. Also, the nitrous tune is a compromise when driving without the juice so daily driving performance is hurt compared to a tune set up for the car for daily driving. I had 3 tunes - one for 89 octane daily driving and winter driving (a little less torque), one for 92 octane that was a little more aggressive and could be used at the track if my bottle was empty or pressure was low, and a 93 tune just for the juice at the track.
In addition to the tune will need to upgrade the rear end. Without a Tlok you will not be able to hook up with the instant torque that the juice brings on. I actually had more torque on the juice than I have with my supercharger (but I don't have to search for a place to fill the bottle, keep the heater going to keep pressure up, remember to arm the system, pay each weekend to fill the bottle, etc).

A tuner with tunes from one of the custom tune shops is your step one. If that isn't enough then you'll be ready for your next performance upgrade. Nitrous is very flexible so you can set it up for a small shot, say 25 or 50hp and not need to worry about abuse at all. Also, you can pretty much engage it in any gear and for a specific rpm range. 100hp shot needs a few basic mods, a nitrous specific tune and some drive line upgrades if you'll be hitting it hard. Over 100 needs to be dyno tuned and you are pushing the safety envelope to the edge.
Start with a good tune and then work your way up is my advice.

I used to run Nitrous on my old Eagle Talon TSi turbo that went boom on a 50 shot. Of course it might have been the fact I was pushing 450hp with an upgraded turbo on a 4 cylinder. With the 50 shot on top. Still haven't figured that one out. I guess the point is parting that out got me the mustang.
