Default Help On Brakes

Before I deployed my brakes went to junk so I took my 07 to a mech and they told me my front rotors were shot as were my calipers. They quoted me at $800 to replace and repair. I have seen at newtakeoff a gt package for $170 but that would require me to upgrade my 16' wheels to at least 17's right? I haven't been able to find just stock replacements...any help guys?

If you get the GT takeoff package then yes, you will need the bigger wheels because it won't clear the 16".

Are you sure that your calipers need to be replaced though? That would be very unusual to need more than the rotors and pads.

I ran out of pad on my brakes when I had my V6 and the calipers just ground through the metal of the rotors. I had to replace the pads and the rotors, which I wanted to do anyways. The only way I could see the calipers needing to be replaces would be if the calipers dug all the way through the metal facade of the rotor and locked onto the interior portion. I could see that causing a ton of damage down there, but you would definitely know that had happened. If you've just heard a constant metal grind down there, I would think all you need is pads and rotors, and you may even be able to have your current rotors resurfaced and use them again.

What JimC said. I have 130,000 mile on my original calipers and they are used quite aggressively.

Also the calipers could be stuck from corrosion which can be caused buy not changing the brake fluid at least once a years. Brake fluid absorbs water over time which is not a good thing. If that is the case then the calipers would need replaced.

I would definitely get a second or even third opinion on your brakes. I can't imagine your calipers going bad this soon.

What did you do to make them go bad? I mean mine is 06 and my rotos are thick as all hell and calipers work like a dream. Well not really a dream, they dont grip with a ****, but i've hated them since i bought the car.

Yes, I think I need at least a second opinion...they were being very shady and my wife has been driving the car still for the last 6 months. So I think if it were a huge problem something would have gived by now...

Definitely get a second opinion. I just can't imagine that the calipers themselves are bad and it is more likely someone looking to just make more money off you.

Like NicePony I have a lot of miles on my car -- 160,000 and still on the original calipers with no problems, and they get used pretty hard at the track.

Even the rear set are good, and I used to do burnouts at the track by foot braking (before I got the line locks) it so the rear calipers/brakes would heat up pretty good; it would wear out the rotors and pads quickly but the calipers are fine.

They are a strokin you.
Get the Ford S197 GT brake upgrade package from
www.mustangsunlimited.com
and go with the increased capacity of the GT brakes.
$159.95 plus pads.

Your calipers are a fine.
NTO sells questionable rusty rotors from whats been
said round here.
And the NTO calipers are not so new or pristeen.
At least the ones you now have have never been
opened up to the atmosphere whereas the NTOs
have been by removal from the S197 GT they came
OEM on.
