its probably a foot beneath the steering wheel. the light flashes red every so often which makes me feel like its some sort of security something or other. theres a button on the back that doesn't do anything when I push it and there are two wires coming out of the back that run up inside somewhere. can anybody help me out?

Looks like it goes to a aftermarket alarm. More then likely the valet switch. Just follow the wires and you will come to the control unit. Probably can get some info off control unit, like a manufacturer and model number.

Don't mess with it!
It's the seat eject switch.

Seriously, it could be anything that the previous owner had installed for whatever option he put in.
Not an OEM gizmo...
