Default double clutching????

Hi all I have a question about double clutching. I understand what it is and why you would want to do it. but why do you release the clutch? Why cant you press in the clutch pull it in to neutral, while the clutch is in rev the motor to where you want it then put it in gear? thanks for the help

double clutching is not necessary at all. It was only ever done because the transmissions at the time either did not have syncros or they were very poor syncros.

No modern car needs to be double clutched.

Agreed...double clutching is not necessary anymore...

HOWEVER.. rev matched downshifts and good heel toe work is another story if you have a manual. All you automatic owners go back to sleep and ignore this post. lol.

hi all I am looking at the down shifting aspect as far a up shifts I agree it is a thing of the past but when it comes to down shifting on slippery roads, or going in to the passing lane. You will get allot more respect when you drop 2 gears and go rather then that annoying lurch or jerk

But back to the question at hand dose any one know why you release the clutch? I am interested in the mechanics of it

OK this posting has bothered me, so I had to add my two cents in. Double clutching has nothing to do with downshifting two gears. Like Mikehawke said double clutching was back in the day when you first hit the clutch to release the gear and then hit it another time to reengage the gear in order to go from say first to second. It is no longer needed because syncros allow you to do it in one motion. Do yourself a favor dont ever use the fast and the furious as a reference again.
