Default Fuel level sensor

Hi, I'm new to the forums and was wondering if anyone had ever replaced the fuel level sensor in a 2005 v6 mustang and how hard of a job it would be.

Thanks for any and all information

I haven't Chris...but just thought I would throw out there that many of us have had failed stepper motors in the gauge cluster making the fuel gauge or others inoperable. Wanted to make sure you definately knew you had a bad sender before you went to the trouble...

Thanks for the heads up, maybe I'll take it over to the dealer and have them check it. I have a tune on the car and don't know if it will mess anything up anything if they hook up to the computer.

Well since it's an 05 I doubt any warranty still applies so I would just let them know it has a tune and advise them not to do any ECU "update" that might be in their system as a factory recommended reflash.

I can tell my sender works because the in dash mileage count down function still works, and the fuel gauge still turns red when I drop down to like only 10 miles left till empty...so it's getting feedback, just the ****ty motor won't drive the needle. This summer I'm gonna pull the dash and ship it off...there are speedo shop guys on ebay who will replace all of the steppers for ~ $100...

Its not hard.
The worst part is if you dont have the
fuel tank lockring wrench.

You have determined that the level sender is bad how?
Other things could be wrong.
Dont go chasing your tail if you dont have to.
Have you checked the sender with a VOM?

What's your complain? Does your fuel gauge stop working all of the sudden, but works sometime. :P

Yea, do you fully understand the 4 operating modes of the fuel level system?
It may be operating properly like Ford designed it.
A new level sensor would not help in this case.

Given the year of your car, my guess is stepper motor. As Dean Martin suggested, check your miles to empty indicator. If it changes as you drive, your sensor should be ok. If you can handle a soldering iron, you can replace it yourself for a lot less than a dealer would charge. Do a search for "stepper" here and on Ebay.

If you cAN RUN a Volt Ohm Meter, the sensor can be checked
BEFORE pulling the sensor from the gas tank.
