A road trip within first 1000 miles: consequences
Hi,
I was wondering what are the consequences of taking a road trip with a brand new 2012 Mustang within the first 1000 miles? I drove my car in a mixed city/freeway driving for the first 350 miles, then took a 700 mile road trip where I drove 60-85 with some stops and some city driving in that period. The car had around 30 miles when I got it (probably spirited driving).
Thanks

I think the owners' manual says to drive 100 miles before extended periods at wide open throttle and at least 100 miles before 'better performance/competition conditions'.
It sounds like you should be ok (unless you were doing 60 in 2nd gear )

I'm not worried about WOTs because I didn't do many. I'm just worried about the "extended periods of driving at the same speed" part in the first 1000 miles, which I did from 350 miles to 1000 miles.
What can happen if you do this? I don't understand all this "ring seating" talk.

I believe you need to vary your speed (don't set the cruise control and run steady for a long period of time). Check the OM but you should be good if you do some occassional "sprints".

OP,
You're more than fine with 350miles of mixed city driving. That's plenty before taking a long road trip at a particular speed/RPM. These engines are mostly broken in right from the factory and the rest is done within the first 200miles of mixed driving.
I say you're ready to rip now!

What???? These new car engines of today are designed to be used every day, city, highway, it doesnt matter, they are designed to be driven and used everyday.....quit worrying and enjoy your new car.....or if your afraid you caused damage, just park it and dont drive it ever again, it'll last longer...
