Wider out back?
Thinking of getting slightly wider tires out back on my car. I have 245/45-17 all around now, and I'm thinking about getting 275/40-17 if they will fit on my wheel. I can get the tires for the same price, but does anyone know if the 275's will fit on the stock 97 cobra wheel?
You will need at least a 9" wheel to safely/properly run a 275 tire.
I stock '97 Cobra wheel is 17"x8", so you should stick with a 245, or maybe push to 255. MANY run a 275 on an 8" wheel, but personally think this is a poor fit. There are also NO manufacturers to which I am aware that recommend a 275 on an 8" wheel. Excessive width of tire on a wheel leads to bulge of sidewalls, less than ideal tire wear/handling and some strain to tire construction.

I recommend you stick withing the manufacturers specs of a given tire.
You will be more likely to run a bit wider tire as you are in a 45 series. This profile is a bit taller and more forgiving in the sidewall, so find some tires you like and look at "approved rim width". I would say that a 255 is about as wide as you may find.

You can run a 275 Nitto drag radial (they run smaller than most) on stock rims with no issues. They really don't bulge out that bad.
Technically you're no suppose to, but i have 2 friends that have been doing this for many years.
