Default FITTING Drag Slicks/Wheels to S197

I went on eBay & bought a pair of WELD draglite wheels with 28x10.5x15 MICKEY THOMPSON slicks on them... couldn't resist the deal ($500).

The backspacing is 4.5" The bolt pattern is correct, but I'm not SURE they'll fit in the wheel wells of my ROUSH correctly without any "tweaking"..

It's WINTER in MA and I don't wanna go out in the cold to try them... so if anyone knows for SURE...I'd appreciate your insight - THANKS!

With a 4.5" back-space, I am sorry to say you will never run those on your S197. The back-space of a 10" wheel for an S197 is 7.4", so 3" differential.

Are you sure these numbers are correct?

Jazzer

PS. Measure the back space of your current wheels and compare. See if the new wheels can be moved outward as much as the difference between the two wheels.

Jazz thanks for your reply... here's a copy of the text from eBay:

This is a set of polished 15 x 8 Weld Racing Draglite wheels and MT or Mickey Thompson ET Drag Racing Slicks. The tires are in excellent shape with lots of passes left on them (the tread depth is over 5mm thick). The tires are 28.8 x 10.5-15 in size. The Weld Wheels have a 4.5 inch backspace. These wheels fit 5 lug Mustangs and similar vehicles with a similar bolt pattern of 4.5 inch. Buyer is responsible for application.

It's a bit confusing, as written... I guess I'm going to have to pull a wheel off this weekend and see if one of the slick wheels fits! (It'd be nice if I can report back on Monday saying the FIT was slick..LOL!)

IF they end up NOT working, I'm sure someone @ the drag strip will buy them!

I found the link below & it's interesting to note they claim MOST 15" wheels have 1-5 inch back-spacing... check it out:

This weekend, I'll grab the spare tire and compare back spacing to the Weld wheels.

OK... your original post says 10.5" and must be referring to the width of the tire itself and figured it was the wheel width. An S197 8" wheel generally has about 5.75" of back-space so you will not have a problem with the wheel fitment. As for the width of tire, I cannot say for sure you will not rub. I just don't know enough about M/T fitment nor how wide they will be on an 8" wheel, but I imagine they will be fine.

Thanks again Jazzer...

I just took delivery of a set of ROUSH Extreme lowering springs for my DD Mustang which I'll be installing over the weekend.

I might as well check the fit of the wheels on the ROUSH while I'm in the garage & all dirty anyway! From what I just learned about back-spacing (from you & the 'net) it seems the MT's will stick out about an inch more than if the back-spacing was stock.

Maybe we'll ALL learn something!

Your welcome and I agree about the new tire location relative to the OEM's

Hey Jazzer... I tried them this weekend, but NO LUCK!

I found out that S197 needs 7.5" back spacing as you had said... check this link to a set of wheels I WISH I had known about before buying mine from eBay!

Oh well... the lowering springs went into the DD beautifully & it was a great time with my son.

Now I've got something else to sell... or an "interesting trade" LOL!
