Tires for 95 mustang help
howdy everyone. i have recently bought a 95 mustang gt. it has tires on it from the cobra and the people that had the car before me put tires that were too big on the front. so when i turn all the way the tires rub. also they have corvette tires on the back. im looking to see what type tire sizes and rims i should get for optimum performance.
the reason i brought this up is cause today i was using a tom tom GPS and it said i was going 5 mph slower than what is said on my odometer and i have heard that bigger tires will throw the odometer off. if someone could help me i would much appreciate it. preferably i would like 17's on the front and 18's on the back.

the rim is not important. an apx 26" tall tire is stock but 24 1/2 to 25-ish should be ok
check out 225-60-15 , and see rollout and what not.... that was stock size on early 90's stuff
a gear swap could do it too.... but going slower than speedo would mean something like having 3.73 and going to 3.55 and correcting, not the usual bump
also a 8" wide tire is about stock

thanks a lot man. so im definitely not a tire guru but the apx 26" and then the 24-25 is that how low the profile is on the tire?
and the rim size doesnt matter you say so that is good then. i read a tire guide and it said for the front a 255/45-17 would do the job what is the difference between that and the 225/60-15?
as for the gear ratio i know nothing about that. the guy that i bought the car from did a whole bunch of mods on it. im not sure about the gear ratio though on the car i should prolly find that out.

Ignore what bob says about tires.. he swears that anything but a slick is a waste
Look on the sidewall of the tire and post what the actual size is... not what you have read about, or what you have heard about... what does it say ON the tires.

while your rear tires ARE slightly larger than stock, its not hurting anything.
245/45/17 os the normal size for an SN-95 with 17" wheels. As for the rear tires, they should have installed 275/40/17's As that would be the correct size for a wider rear tire.

The rubbing must be an issue with the off-set of the wheels, so I the wheels must have been replaced as the tire size you are running is OEM on the '95 GT's. I recommend you keep the tires as close to OEM diameter as you can, to help avoid speedometer issues. Gear changes will also effect speedo accuracy, as mentoned earlier, and you will need a replacement speedo gear in trans to address it. This is an easy mod, but has a limited amount of range and believe it is 5 MPH incriments.

thanks a lot. the rear wheels have a wider base cause as i mentioned earlier they are corvette rear tires. and the front rims just werent made for the car it seems. the people took the rims they had off of the car before i bought it and put some old ones back so when i turn it makes this popping/rubbing noise. i think its a combo of the tires and rims.
as for the gear thing can anyone break that down for me in lay mans terms?
