Is a Mustang GT Any Good at Drifting?

By -

YouTuber Taylor Ray takes out a Mustang GT for some drifting hot laps.

More often than not, we see Coyote Mustangs dominating the drag strip and competing on road courses. Mustangs of the last few years have proven to be incredibly capable machines elsewhere, though, showing doubters that they are indeed drivers’ cars. We know a Mustang is good in a straight line, and even in the corners, but how does it hold up on a drifting track?

Taylor Ray is an experienced drifter who owns several cars that are set up to go sideways — very sideways. On this particular day, he brought his Miata, a very hard car to drift due to its short wheel base. In addition to hot-lapping the Miata and a few other machines, in the video above, Taylor takes his first go at a 2012 Mustang GT. Not knowing what to expect, he poses the question, “How good is a Mustang as a drift car?”

We’ll let you enjoy the video for yourselves. But in short, Ray likes the Mustang’s ability to turn in quickly and maintain the drift with its power. That said, he explains that the car is somewhat loose, and not exactly easy to control.

After around 25 hot laps, you can tell quite obviously what his final thoughts are, and spoilers aside, they’re pretty positive. So give it a watch, and see for yourself how well a GT performs as a drifter.
