Simple answer: They won't scratch your paint.
Lanyards are coated with plastic, so no worries there. On mine, I wanted black lanyards and I couldn't find black ones anywhere, so I just used some 8 gauge stranded electrical wire and made my own.
*A quick note on a common misconception that many have: The lanyards don't hold the hood down. The pins do that. The lanyards are only to keep you from losing your pins when you pull them out (so they can dangle there will you work). So, in that sense, they could be made out of old shoe laces if you wanted. LOL
Anyway, use a plastic-coated cable and it won't scratch your paint. Not at all. Also, it helps to not have a TON of extra lanyard flopping around, keep them pretty snug and you will minimize how much they bang against your hood. Not to mention that it's ugly when they aren't cut to size and you've got these BIG unsightly loops o lanyard flopping this way and that on your hood.

I had the lanyards on mine but I removed them after the plastic coating started to turn brown and crack.
Even though the lanyards have a coating they did dull the paint where they were rubbing, and I couldn't buff the marks out by hand.
