Default stay in 3rd for 1/4 mile?

For those of you who have a manual and are stock or lightly modded (intake tune) with stock gears. Are you leaving it in 3rd through the quarter mile or are you shifting to 4th. I just got back from the track and I was trapping around 102-103 (it was a 100 degree nightand humidin phoenix at 1200') so I was pretty happy with that. I was just wondering if I should have tried shifting to 4th around 95mph or so because it felt like I ran out of power in the upper RPM's in 3rd with the heat and humidity.

With the 3.55's you should be able to stay in third right through the traps.

+1 i've trapped 106 in third and it's good for a few more mph i'm sure. Ultimately you want to be in 4th, but you'll need gears to make it worth the shift.

I was staying in 3rd when the car was stock, the fews times I shifted into 4th my times and speed were both slower, you lose a little momentum when you shift and your already at the end of the track so there is not enough time to gain it back.

but 3.55s I think your running out of RPM....
That's true with the stock tune, but with a modded tune the rpm limit can be increased, which allows leaving the tranny in 3rd while crossing the finish line.

i left it in 3rd and trapped 103 in all runs except 2 where i trapped 104 nearly 105....with jus intake tune and O/R exhaust. although someone with a mach 1 told me he used to go through the traps in 3rd but started playing with his shift points and actually ran faster E.Ts at a little higher trap when moving his shift down a few RPMs and ending in 4th. but i havent been to the tracksince and imyet to try it.

o and it was in 90 degree weather as well not sure about humidity

its not really about the amount of RPMs you can get its more about you staying in the powerban. so just do some tests and see if there is a diff. in 1/4 times. that is the only way to really found out. i mean if you are a good driver you may improve your time.

im usually at the very limit in 3rd...........we're talkin 6400 RPM at the traps..........sometimes, i wonder if its better to shift into fourth BECAUSE fourth is so close to third, and its the easiest shift you can make, maybe powershifting into 4th is worth it. who knows.

If you feel like you are running out of power in third you should definitaly play with the 3 to 4 shift. See how affects your trap speed and ET. The key is to keep the car well within the meat of it`s torque and HP curve. I would rather be in the curve and still accelerating rather then coming out of the power band and running into a wall. You have to weigh that against your shifting potential and any drop in RPM though. Be honest, even if you have to admit you are losing too much engine speed on shifts. The numbers never lie.

Sounds like what you need is one of two different things. You can increase the motors upper RPM power capability and shift the power band up another 500 to 750 RPM or you can go withmore rear gear ratio. Both are going to cost money, but will take care of the issue. I would go with a rear gear change as it should be the cheaper alternative and the seat of the pants feeling is awesome.
