dealership replacing part they damaged but says they need to keep the old part?

They need to have the part back should the supplier want it back. Sometimes they ask for it and other times they dont, but if they do ask and the dealer doesnt have the part, they will be charged for it. Besides, if they are replacing for you anyway, why do you care if they take it back?

It is called a Core, and yes, it is normal practice. If you keep the part, there is a charge for that. Like a steering box I have on the floor to go back to Ford for a van, it has a $225 core on it. If I keep the box, it is $225. If I send it back, there is no charge.
Also, there is a Ford customer service rep on here that I'm sure could answer your question a bit better than me.

Warranty work . . . let them send it back.
If you're paying out of pocket, it's your part.
My friend just had his Ford pickup fixed from a front collision at a body shop. They kept his Deerstop bumper. I asked him why he didn't get it back and he said they just kept it. I told him to call them up and ask for it back, as he paid for it originally. They were all disappointed because they had already found a buyer. I felt bad for my friend almost getting screwed. I told him that unless they gave him money off the fix and explicitly mentioned they wanted the bumper, he shouldn't feel bad about taking it back.

Good morning everyone!
I just wanted to add some feedback on the question of the dealer requesting the part back. They may want the old steering wheel for a training session with the technician that damaged it, or if there is some underlying issue they may want to show to an engineer. Or as BlueBloodedPony said, the old one may be needed as a core charge. Hope that clarifies it a bit.
