I'd at the very least pull the heads off the old motor and sell them on ebay.

So, how did you blow it???

$4k is reasonable...I'd take the Crate Engine though, and install it myself!

Really? That is just plain odd. This all just started out of the blue with some engine noise? You did say your mechanic added 3 quarts of oil. I'm guessing you were 3 quarts low and starved the engine of oil. Either that or your mechanic added 3 quarts of oil for a total of 9 quarts and just made a simple problem much worse.

I would start doing your own maintenance on the next motor. And check your oil level every 1,000 miles at least.

I really dont know exactly what happened, but i do know my engine needs to be replaced and ive been carless for the last 2 weeks. At this point i just want to get a new engine in the car and sell this thing as much as i love it there is to many problems. Maybe in a few years when i have the money i can get a new boss 302 with factory warranty so i dont have to worry about things like this.

You can get a low mileage used motor for about 2300, shipped to your mechanic. plug and play, couldn't be more that 1k to install. lots of life left too.
