All this talk about oil, there are no bad oils anymore, the cheapest 5/20 would never give a problem if you change it regular. Synthetics are only good for extending change duration. Motorcraft 5/20 at Walmart for 10 bucks a jug cant be beat.

I switched to 100% 5w20 Synthetic Ford Motorcraft engine oil on my last oil change ($102.00 cdn after taxes). It's been -35 celcius here a few times BEFORE the windchill factor. I ran that same oil in my Focus from when it had 100,000km's on it, and the car ran great. I plan to run Full Syn oil year round in my engine. BTW, they only use the standard 5w20 oil in Canadian engines from the factory/dealership...only you folks down south get the blend...That annoy's the hell out of me...lol

sure the big oil makers have great salesmen but they arn't who I talked to I talked to or e-mailed the real experts that are in their labs and looking for improvments and doing QC on the oil
if someone tells you that 5W-20 is even one SAE viscosity range lighter than say 0W-20
or 5W-30 and 10W-30
they are ill informed or just foolish
go buy some 5W-50, 20W-50and SAE strait 50 and at 75F pour them you'll see that they are both very thick but the same thickness
then get some 5W-20 and you'll see its much thiner that the previous

Just stick to the 5w20 syn, i've used synthetic for over 10 years with no problems and never heard of anyone having problems with it. Synthetic can extend your oil changes, but they say if you drive normal, it can last way over 3K miles. If you race, drag, or just beat on your car, well it breaks down alot faster, andthen you might need to change it before you even hit 3K miles. not sayingchange yourfresh oil since you just wentto the track either.Also the 5 is the viscosity at one temp(can't remember) and the 20 is the viscosity at a higher temp and of course the w stands for winter. You can drive this weight in the summer or winters. If you couldn't, ford would have put 2 weights on your car, one for winter one for summer. usually makers put the reg. motor oil cause they can get it for cheap and put it in thier cars, since it has to have it. some companys put syn in everything. everytime a buy a vehicle, the first thing is an oil change.

viscosity is measured at standardtemp, humidity,and pressure
and there is no such thing as multi viscosity in the true since
but using viscosity measuring equ at a specific sub-zero temp that it reaches a specific thickness at a specific temp
and that thickness at -50F is the greatest thickness that the car can still start the engine safely
once the engine is running the temp is far higher than the weather can get it to
so don't worry about the summer temp

Viscosity is not the "thickness" per se, but rather a liquid's ability to deform and flow, which can be referred to as looking thick or thin in layman's terms.
When oil breaks down or gets contaminated, its viscosity and lubrication qualities change, and it must be replaced.

Another 5W20 oil thread. Go to BOBISTHEOILGUY, and you'll see that the 5W20 weight oils perform well in these engines as shown by several Used Oil Analysis (UOAs). Your warrantee requires 5W20 to be changed at 5000 miles, says so in the owners manual with no wiggle room. Many will argue that the warrantee really DOES NOT require 5W20. I would have to comment that Ford is broke, and if you have an engine problem, even an oil leak, and want it to be covered under warrantee, you better have paperwork that says you changed the oil every 5000 miles with 5W20.
