351W Swap Project -Questions
Ok so I have a few other threads around on this project and I ran into a bit of a snag, the pistons in the motor are shot. In a month or so I will buy new pistons, the issue is what sort of compression ratio I should run. I'm going to be using the motor as a daily driver so I want something that can at least leave the gas station (15-20 MPG) and still have enough power to be fun. What would you suggest for a good compression ratio? I was thinking in the area of 10.5-10.7.
I got a line on a set of GT40P heads for $200 so I was thinking that paired with a 600 vacuum secondary carb, and my cam that I picked (COMP 268H hydraulic flat tappet).
What do you guys think?

Are you on a budget with this project? Could you spring for some better heads? I mean for $200 it's ok on a stock 5.0 low budget build. However you can find a nice set of used heads for an extra $500-$700 that will outflow the 40Ps. And if you port the heads I doubt they're gonna match a set of aftermarket heads. And after the price of porting you basically paid for a set of used heads.

Well then I'd say you're better off spending another few hundred dollars on some better heads. The compression ratio you're aiming for is good for the street if you're not planning on forced induction in the future.

yeah I don't plan on forced induction with this motor. I'm definitely going to get a better set of heads in the future, but that will be part of the next build I'm planning. Later down the road I want to do a 408 build.
Turns out that the last person that had the motor rebuilt did it wrong and used pistons with to long of a skirt, because of that when the assembly got to the bottom of the stroke the skirt hit the rod and cause the pistons to fracture.
I already bought the GT40P heads too which are still a good upgrade over the fail heads that came on the 351 I got. Still need a few more things and if anyone knows where i can get them for a good price let me know please.
Would a good option for the distributor be to get a old points distributor and rebuild it with a modern internals upgrade?
