Default Replacing 6 cyl motor in 98

I'm in arlington,TX. I got a freebie from my brother, 98 mustang 6 cyl., 150,000 miles. Body and interior in great shape. I am in the graphics business, and usually do not have time to work on cars. However, I've always wanted to repair or replace an engine. So if I mess up, i can have the junk dealer pick it up. If it runs, I'll give it to someone who needs transportation.

I've never torn into an engine, but have tools or can buy what's needed. Motor starts easily, but spitting a lot of water out of tailpipe.

Can anybody recommend a starting point as far a diagnostics of engine. Found Chiltons on Amazon, and have ordered it. Any other suggestions of diagnostic materials available. Probably need to replace engine, but I want to do the work, whatever is required. Any comments would always be appreciated.

P.S. - Have an 65 mustang in mint condition and S10 with over 300 hp, but I had the work done.
