Get a good shift kit like Trans-Go or B&M. I installed a Trans-Gokit in about 4 hours or so and it is the best thing i've done to the car. Much, much firmer shifts. With stock rubber, I could bark second and chirp third. All you need to do is just put it to the wood and hold on. 4.10's or 3.73 would help out too. My next project is going to be a stall converter. With that I'll be beating manuals with one hand on the wheel and the other on my favorite beverage

^ I second that. 1st gets you off the line quicker but the shift into2nd kills you. With my trans in drive I ran 14.33 in my vert. With shifting from 1st to second and then to drive, I ran a V6 time of 15.06.
IMOP and from what I have done in my 66, I would go with a shift kit from B&M of TCI for your tranny. They are fairly easy to install (just follow thedirections)with the car up on ramps. A shift kitis far superior than what a tunner can do.
I added a shift kit and a stall converterto my 66 stang and knocked off 1.25 seconds off my times. however, I plan on getting a manual for my 00.
