Default Ticking/Clicking noise in 1st

<FONT size=2>Hello fellow mustang owners. My first post here. Looks like a very "Informative" site. OK heres my problem. I have a 2001 Mustang 4.6L Automatic V-6 with 58,000 miles. I bought the car about a year ago for my wife.We noticed a ticking noise when taking off. Only around about 10 to 15 mph. I thought maybe it was the speedometer cable. Wellwe bought the car anyways just telling my-self I would check it out later. You know how that goes. Well now just the other day I'm driving the car (I don't drive it much) and was really listening to the noise a little closer. I noticed it quit ticking once it shifted to 2nd gear. So I stopped the car, put it in 2nd gear and took off. NO ticking. I stopped, dropped it all the way down to 1st. It ticked the whole time at all speeds.Shifted to 2nd, NO ticking. To 3rd, NO ticking. So that ruled out the speedometer cable.</FONT></P>

<FONT size=2>So, I guess the question is: Is this a problem in my transmission or what? Maybe a linkage problem? Or could it be the speedodometer cable? It shifts fine when driving. Never had any other problems. Checked fluid. It was full. Any suggestions guys (and gals) ????</FONT></P><edited><editID>Breezeman65</editID><editDate>37920.8083680556</editDate></edited>

I'm not sure, but I don't think your car has a speedo cable,I think it's electronic. The noise is probably coming from inside the trans, maybe the planetary gears have a chipped tooth or something.I would take it to a transmission shop and let them diagnos it,it's something they do everyday.

Good information, I'd say that points to the tranny...

Default Ticking/Clicking noise in 1st

I just found a technical service bulletin for a noise in 1st only, there is a clutch pack that is rattling against the case, the fix is to take the trans out and install a spring in the case to keep the clutches from rattling. If this is the noise you are hearing,it won't hurt anything at all to keep driving it,it's just a noise and it won't do any damage.

Did any one notice thatbreeze said 4.6L automaticV-6?</P>

P.S. When you put an auto into 2nd gear it starts in first and will only shift as high as second gear, same with third, only as high as third. It is strange you don't get the ticking noise when you lock out the tranny in any other gear then 1st. But I did find the same bullitin that Nostang did, should be safe to drive. Ford would have recalled cars for the tranny issue if it wasn't ok.</P>
