Default Dumb Newbie Question...

What's really involved in swapping out the bottom end of a 4.6 2V, i.e the crank, rods and pistons? How much downtime would there be to a daily driver, and how much dough will I need? Comparable in cost to a blower?</P>

I'd appreciate any thoughts. I've done about all I can do without pulling the valve covers or the bottom out.</P>

Default Dumb Newbie Question...

Well a while back I talked to my installers about installing a paxton novi 2000 on my 4.6 2v and they said that would cost about a grand and it would take about 6 hours of down time, without unkown complications. </P>

If you're taking the bottom end out of that engine I would imagine it would have to be down for a few days, about 2-3. Without buying parts I would estimate 500-1000 in labor, but thats a rough estimate I'm not really sure.</P><edited><editID>mabguru</editID><editDate>37967.5039930556</editDate></edited>

HAY WHATS UP.</P>

IT REALLY ALL DEPENDS ON WHAT YOUR CURRENT MOTOR IS. IF IT IS A 96 TO 98 YOU DON'T EVEN WANT TO REDO JUST THE BOTTOM END BECAUSE THE HEADS ARE SO s**tTY. IF THAT IS THE CASE THEN YOU WILL DEFFENTLY WANT TO UP GRADE TO THE NEWER PI HEADS. ABOUT 3 MOUNTHS AGO I BLEW MY MOTOR. IT WAS A 98 4.6. THE NEW MOTOR I GOT IS A 2001 BLOCK WITH THE PI HEADS THAT ARE PORTED AND STAGE 2 CAMS, AND EVERYTHING IS FORGED WITH LOWER COMPRESSION FOR A SUPERCHARGER. THE COMPLETE UPGRADE RAN ME ABOUT 6 GRAND, AND THAT WAS DOING THE WORK MY SELF. IF YOU HAVE A 99 OR NEWER GT. IT WILL BE CHEAPER BECAUSE YOU WILL HAVE THE BLOCK AND THE HEADS.YOU CAN JUST BUY THE ROTATING ASSEMBLY WHICH IS $2500.00 FOR A FORGED SET. WHILE THE MOTOR IS APART YOU SHOULD DEFFENTLY GET THE HEADS PORTED WHICH IS A ROUND $1000. AND THE CAMS AND VALVES ARE AROUND A 1000. IF YOU PLAN ON A SUPERCHAGER IN THE FUTURE. I DEFFENTLY RECOMEND DOING THE BOTTOM END FIRST.</P>

Thanks for the info. I have a 2003 GT, so the heads are good. I'm really not too unhappy with the cam - yet.</P>

I've been talking to MuscleMotors about a 5.1 stroker shortblock - probably once the tax return hits!</P>

For my rebuild Labor cost me $730not includingtax. My engine was in the machine shop for a few months. I also told them that I wasn't in ahurry either. I can't imagine only having it in there for a few days. I wouldn't assume it would only take a few days I'd ask first. Also make sure whoever you take your engine to knows how to work on mod motors.</P>
