OP your doing it right in my opinion,

I always have it in neutral before turning off the car, then when its off put it in gear.

The way I look at it, the less time I have the clutch depressed the better off it is. If you like to "ride the clutch" or have it depressed at lights or when you are doing things like this you are wearing out the throw-out bearing. which is the number one cause of having to replace a clutch. I use the clutch only to change gears and start the car, and only momentarily, it never gets held in for more than 3 seconds at a time.

There is no mechanical reason to have your clutch depressed when turning the car off.

Do whatever makes you feel happy... its your car.
