I have a 2002 GT, it has developed a ticking sound on the back right side of the motor. I am guessing it is a rod bearing. What is the best, least expensive route I can take with this? Can it be repaired, should I have it rebuilt, or should I be looking for a used motor?

Ticking, that's probably valetrain noise. A rod bearing makes more of a knock sound. It could also be an exhaust leak; there's a gasket at the manifold/midpipe flange that can be problematic. The exhaust leak theory also fits the location of where you hear the noise coming from and is commonly observed as a ticking sound.

Get an automotive stethescope and (engine running) probe around on the valve cover and then go underneath the car and probe it on the block, oil pan and exhaust manifold. That will pinpoint your noise.

If it's ticking from a valve, although that's not good it also isn't the end of the world. You could probably drive it forever lkke that. Rod knock is different, once that starts you ain't got much time.

I'll give the stethoscope a try. I noticed the ticking about a month ago and it has gotten a little louder since. Kind of sounds like a sewing machine. Also I can't hear it during acceleration or while using cruise control.

Could be piston slap.

Most of what I have read about piston slap says it usually goes away after the car warms up. Mine doesn't stop, could it still be piston slap?
