steering rack replacement need help

steering rack replacement need help
I thought changing the leaky steering rack in my 99 GT convertible would be quick and painless. Everything was going smooth except I cannot get the steering shaft to line up with the rack. It seems like the shaft shrunk. all of a sudden its too short. 
Any ideas on how to get this to fit. I decided to stop for the day because I was getting frustrated. Thanks for you time and assistance.
