Lightweight chasis rebuild aluminum/carbon fiber/ composites? 2400lb mustang?
Ok so I have been going to the track with a buddy of mine and he introduced me to his uncle. Now according to his uncle, his mustang weights only 2400lbs curb?!?! Now this car is a twin tubo race gas drag car he built with 1100 or so hp, so Its probably pretty quick with no weight and a lot of power. That is if it can grip anyway...
So I asked him how on earth he managed to take out soo much weight, because an interior strip, ac delete, and a few light weight parts will only drop a few hundred pounds. Now apparently this guy owns a shop, and works on cars for a living and spends all his free time working on his mustang. He said that every single exterior panel is carbon fiber that he made which takes off a few more lbs but this was originaly a 3400 lb mustang so at best hes down to 3000 with all carbon fiber, no interior and one race seat etc. probably closer to 3200... After this he said that he removed all crash structures and replaced all steel and iron chasis parts with carbon composites and aviation aluminum.
Has anyone else done this before? Or do most people only worry about power after their interior is gone? I wan't to know if any of these chasis lightening parts are available for sail or if all work was done custom... Input?
---note: I have no proof of the weight of the car, this is just what he told me so don't chew me out....---
