My advise? Take it to a professional. A good quality primer, base coat, clear coat can cost up to 100 bucks a pint. Hell, even PPG at NAPA is 70-80 bucks a pint. Need probably a quart minimum. Not to mention the other materials needed. Not cheap.
Not all HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) spray guns are equal. In my experience, most are junk. I paid over 600 for my Iwata HVLP.
With the price of the paint, and your lack of experience, I would say, take to a professional. There are mixing ratios for the primer, base, and clear. But trust me when I say, the pros make it look easy. There is also special additives for the paint for plastics (bumpers, etc). Plastics flexes. Paint doesn't. It chips.
Example: Ever seen a car that looked good from far away, but when you get close, the finish looks like the surface of an orange (called orange peel)? Well, wrong air pressure, wrong paint viscosity, wrong mixing ratio, too much paint not enough fan (runs), too much fan (tiger stripes), etc, etc, all equal a horrible paint job. Bad masking job. There are a lot of variables when painting a car.
If you don't care what the end results are, just go to Autozone and get 10 rattle cans of your favorite color. Sack of newspapers and some duct tape. Investing 500 in paint and materials and not knowing what the end result will be? IDK... Up to you.
