Default 92 tranny drain back problem

hey. i've got a 92 lx conv and for awhile now, when the engine is cold, it slips out of gear when at a stop. i finally took it to a tranny shop and they said that the torque converter is draining back into the pan. seeing as i don't have $400 (and that's just to pull the tranny and disassemble it), is there anything else i can do? will driving it with this problem tear up the car? is there any type of additive i can put in it to help? will letting the car warm up in park for awhile be a workaround? if so, how long does it need to be idling to warm up?

thanks.
