5.0 LX notchback- QUESTIONS
hey guys it looks like i wont be able to sell my blazer but i was wondering how much does a 5.0 lx mustang go for like an 87 or 88 lx notch back usually go for- I would like an LX-
Questions-
1.)Should i get a carburated 5.0 or MPFI 5.0 mustang
2.)anything i should look for when buying an older 5.0 lx
3.)BEST mods for the 5.0 LX-
4.)How strong is the stock 5.0 motor?
5.)How easy are they to work on (this will be a weekend car for the track and a little roll on action around town)
6.)I plan on running nitrous- How do the 5.0's handle it?
im looking for something like this-

RE: 5.0 LX notchback- QUESTIONS
That is a 4 cyclinder i hope you no that,I would go for a fuel injected engine if you are using it for daily driven and a carb 5.0 if you are using it for the track. The 5.0 engines are a strong engine if taken cared of with high millage. They also react better to mods then the newer 4.6's basicly most mods you do will help you out with hp.I would worry about using an high millaged engine with nitrious for track purposes only not that i dont trust the 5.0 its that you are putting alot of stress on an aready 10+year old engine. If i were you id buy a 4cyclinder and drop a good 351 windsor in it.But hey thats up to you good luck...

yeah well you get my drift i should have a $3k budget for the car- It will be more a of a weekend car for sure- What year carb'd should i get- Also parts are pretty abundant for the 5.0 right so a tear down should be pretty basic if new pistons/rods/cam is needed?- should i go boost or juice also?
P.S.- what as far as whp can a stock 5.0 make max (SAFELY) around 400whp?

RE: 5.0 LX notchback- QUESTIONS
i got my 89 notch it is not a 4cyl. the lx notches come in 5.0s too. i paid $2600 and its got 100xxx miles on it. the stock engines are real strong and if taken care of they can last 200K++. when buying the car make sure it shifts good and doesnt grind into 2nd, make sure the drivers seat hasent come loose from hard launches, take a look at the torque boxes (where the rear control arms are tack welded to the body) and see if they have been loosened, and look for any signs of twist in the chassis. the 5.0s are pretty simple to work on (on reason for their popularity) and a good set of tools and a determined do-it-yourselfer are pretty much all that is needed to work on it. and for the first mods: https://mustangforums.com/m_725224/tm.htm. if your trans is a t5 (5 speed) it wont handle 400 whp for very long. you would be better off with a stock AOD or a C4. if you want 400 WHP then your looking at quite a few dollars. i would go with a 351 windsor with heads/cam etc. if you have roughly $4000. but thats just my 2 cents! good luck!

number of years dont matter to a motor. its wear. age has no clue!!!!!
for my 88 notch i paid 2k for it. buffed it out, did a tune up and put flows and ditch the cats, put 355 gears and ran a 13.38 with 154k miles on the odometer
personally carbs dont do nothing for me. you can easily get a car fast and reilable with EFI.
150 shot can be handled with ease just make sure to reduce timeing some
as for working on them. that would be up to you. to me very easy
motor strong but the block is weak after so much HP

Yea, people usually stop their power in the low 500's with the stock 5.0 block. Anything after that is in my words considered... the "DANGER ZONE".

wow 500hp that pretty damn big #'s- b/c i would like this to be a touring car so i think 3.55 gears would suite me good- a/c- 5.0 w/ automatic w/ shift kit, and some other upgrade- Full msd ignition- full BBK exhaust w/ borla turbo xl mufflers, 100 shot of nitrous- of course nitto 555r's on 10" wide cobra rims- JEGS seats- autometer guages (fuel psi, n2o psi, oil psi,)- oil cooler/tranny cooler, 3500 stall- suspension of course
(do you think on this set-up i could hit low 11's)
Hopeing to go onto the hot rod power tour

I would say up the shot, up the gears, add suspension work, slicks, and more motor mods and you can be in the 11's.

its also gotta be a be a road car- for long trips but its races will be in a straight line -
BTW with the summit rotating assembly rebuild kit how much hp could the little 5.0 take? - PRODUCT # SUM-CSUM306KIT
comes with
hypereutic pistons,
Cast iron crank
I beam connecting rods
All gaskets-
P.S.- i would change all the bolts out for ARP- Could this support 600hp safely- b/c i will only be running 400 to 450 hp PLANNED and i would just like to know that i dont have to worry about my bottom end when spraying a 150 to 200 shot of nitrous
