another MAF ?

another MAF ?
from a previous thread i got kind of confused on how the MAF works. if you get an aftermarket one do you have to calibrate something or is it just plug n play and the comp just knows how to adjust the AFR?? some clarification would be nice

RE: another MAF ?
aftermarket mafs have a different calibration completely. thats why they come with new electronics. the maf is programmed according to how large it is, and how large of a sample tube it has. some genious takes the flow data from each and works out a fancy equation so that the sensor sends your computer the correct voltage so that you dont run lean or rich.

RE: another MAF ?
no you need to just buy a pro-m maf that is calibrated for the injectors you want to run. when you get it in the mail, hook it up, install the new injectors and forget about the idea of making your own maf

and if i'm running stock injectors for now than i just order the pro m thing and hook it up and let it do its thing and my car is then ready to run on the new MAF? that easy? where do i get this programmer? how much are they...any links you have would be great

When you order an aftermarket MAF you need to specify which injectors you are using, and which computer you are using. This tells the manufacturer (PMAS or C&L) how to 'calibrate' the MAF output.
You don't need to go to a tuner or use a programmer.
This setup usually leaves a little to be desired though, as the so-called 'calibration' is never very accurate. There is a certain % of error.
Sometimes the error is very small, sometimes it is quite large. It depends on your other modifications, what MAF you use, and how the mods interact with the MAF.
Any off the shelf AFTERMARKET MAF meter will be calibrated to an injector size and computer (X3Z, A9L, etc).
Ford meters are a little different in that they are calibrated only to the computer.
Because of theerror intrinsic to aftermarket MAF meters, which may or may not cause problems, there is another way to run a larger MAF.
This involves getting a custom tune, either from a dyno shop which will burn you a custom tune on a J3 chip. Or, by you purchasng a tuning hardware and software package.
This method of correcting for a larger MAF has the potential to remove all % error which would result from running a larger MAF.
hope that helps,
jason

RE: another MAF ?
over the top but that way better explains it. i got so confused because of a previous thread i was reading on. i was way different than i first thought you had to do when you got a new mass air meter.
