Possible to replace heater core out through glove box on 86 GT w/ a/c removal?
I have an 86 GT vert. Is it possible to replace the heater core through the glove box if I also remove the a/c? What do I need to watch for when removing the a/c? I've heard that certain parts of the system can cause health problems due to freon or something?

you have to drain your system of freon. once you do that you can disconnect the liquid lines and so on. now i think if i remember right on your style you can actually remove your core from the glove box....now would be a good time for a chilton, explains it very well but its almost a no brainer, and make sure you get rtv sealant.

Last i read/heard all a/c cars need the dash removed to get to the heater core. Non-a/c cars have a small cover behind the glovebox.
The main health concerns with freon are when its vented to the atmosphere and if the freon hits skin. Both are bad.

this is what the procedure is according to ebscohost auto repair reference center:
[ol][*]Disconnect the negative battery cable.[*]Remove the floor console and instrument panel as follows:
[*]Remove the four screws that attach the console top panel assembly to the console assembly.[*]Lift the console top panel off the console assembly and unplug the two electrical connectors.[*]Remove the two screws attaching the rear end of the console to the console panel support.[*]Remove the four screws attaching the console assembly to the console panel front support.[*]Remove the four screws attaching the console assembly to the instrument panel.[*]Lift the console assembly off of the transmission tunnel.
NOTE: The console assembly includes a snap-in finish panel which conceals the heater control assembly attaching screws. To gain access to these screws, it is necessary to remove the floor console
[*]Disconnect all underhood wiring from the main wiring harness. Disengage the rubber grommet seal from the dash panel and push the wiring harness and connectors into the passenger compartment.[*]Remove the three bolts attaching the steering column opening cover and reinforcement panel. Remove the cover.[*]Remove the steering column opening reinforcement by removing the two bolts. Remove the two bolts retaining the lower steering column opening reinforcement and remove the reinforcement.[*]Remove the six steering column retaining nuts. Two are retaining the hood release mechanism and four retain the column to the lower brake pedal support. Lower the steering column to the floor.[*]Remove the steering column upper and lower shrouds and disconnect the wiring from the multi-function switch.[*]Remove the brake pedal support nut and snap out the defroster grille.[*]Remove the screws from the speaker covers. Snap out the speaker covers. Remove the front screws retaining the right and left scuff plates at the cowl trim panel. Remove the right and left side cowl trim panels.[*]Disconnect the wiring at the right and left cowl sides. Remove the cowl side retaining bolts, one on each side.[*]Open the glove compartment door and flex the glove compartment bin tabs inward. Drop down the glove compartment door assembly.[*]Remove the five cowl top screw attachments. Gently pull the instrument panel away from the cowl. Disconnect the speedometer cable and wiring. [/ol][*]Drain the coolant from the cooling system and remove the hoses from the heater core. Plug the hoses and the core.[*]Remove the screw attaching the air inlet duct and blower housing assembly support bracket to the cowl top panel.[*]Disconnect the black vacuum supply hose from the in-line vacuum check valve in the engine compartment.[*]Disconnect the blower motor wire harness from the resistor and motor head.[*]Working under the hood, remove the two nuts retaining the heater assembly to the dash panel.[*]In the passenger compartment, remove the screw attaching the heater assembly support bracket to the cowl top panel. Remove the one screw retaining the bracket below the heater assembly to the dash panel.[*]Carefully pull the heater assembly away from the dash panel and remove from the vehicle.[*]Remove the four heater core access cover attaching screws and remove the access cover from the case.[*]Lift the heater core and seal from the case. Remove the seal from the heater core tubes.
To install: [*]Install the heater core tube seal on the heater core tubes. Inspect the heater core sealer in the heater case and replace, if necessary.[*]Install the heater core in the case with the seals on the outside of the case. Position the heater core access cover on the case and install the four attaching screws.[*]Position the heater assembly in the vehicle. Install the screw attaching the heater assembly support bracket to the cowl top panel.[*]Check the heater assembly drain tube to ensure it is through the dash panel and is not pinched or kinked.[*]Working under the hood, install the two nuts retaining the heater assembly to the dash panel. Install the air inlet duct and blower housing support bracket attaching screw. Install one screw to the retainer bracket below the heater assembly to the dash panel.[*]Connect the blower motor ground wire to ground and the harness to the resistor and blower motor lead.[*]Connect the black vacuum supply hose to the vacuum check valve in the engine compartment.[*]Install the instrument panel and floor console by reversing the removal procedure.[*]Connect the heater hoses to the heater core and fill the cooling system. Check the system for proper operation. [/ol]
With Air Conditioning
[ol][*]Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the cooling system.[*]Discharge the refrigerant from the air conditioning system according to the proper procedure.[*]Remove the evaporator case assembly.
NOTE: Whenever an evaporator case is replaced, it will be necessary to replace the suction accumulator/drier.
[*]Remove the four heater core access cover attaching screws and remove the cover from the case.[*]Lift the heater core and seal from the case. Remove the seal from the heater core tubes.
To install: [*]Install the heater core tube seal on the heater core tubes.[*]Inspect the heater core sealer in the evaporator case. Replace with suitable caulking cord, if necessary.[*]Install the heater core in the case with the seals on the outside of the case. Position the heater core access cover on the case and install the four attaching screws.[*]Install the evaporator case.[*]Fill the cooling system. Leak test, evacuate and charge the refrigerant system according to the proper procedure. Observe all safety precautions.[*]Connect the negative battery cable and check the system for proper operation. [/ol]
