Default voltage regulator

hey guys my search function is a little messed up, dunno whats up. Anyways, i have a 1991gt and i was wondering how to tell if my voltage regulator is dead. For some reason the car isnt charging like it usually does, and whenever i turn on an accessory, the battery voltage really dips down. I dunno why, but my car wont start, i jump started it last night, drove it around for a LONG time, and now its dead again, which i had a feeling it would be.

I do have an electric fan, i do have a stock alternator, and i do have underdrive pullies. However this and last winter are the only times i have had problems.

How old is your battery? If your battery is bad the alternator will not charge properly. The voltage regulator is part of the alternator.
Check the wiring at your battery andstarter relay. Make sure all connections are clean and secure.

I had a similar problem with my car and had bad connection at the positive cable on the starter relay. Went to clean the connections and the post pulled out of the relay. I had to get a new relay andcleaned all connections and it was good to go.

the best thing to do is have a Vat test done to the alt in which idle output voltage will be tested and load voltage and amperage output will be verified and compared to spec....my personal opinion of underdrive pullies is they are a waste and cause more harm then good like lowered alt output from idle to cruise rpm with a load added...the voltage regulator is internal on your model and by grounding the field wire you can test max output of alt but that;s all it'll tell you so I reccommend a proffesional vat test and by a shop and not one of those hand held autozone merchandizer tools

thanks buddy, we both share the same opinion on under drive pullies, however my car came with them on. I think they cause more problems then good, and if i could change back to stock pullies, i would in a heart beat.

by process of elimination mine are virtually gone except the crank pulley..I can't find my stock ones[:@].....but I got an elec water pump so that took care of one then a powermaster 100 amp alt..and that took care of the other and no way was I going to put a underdrive pulley on a alt upgrade..that'd defeat the whole purpose of the alt upgrade
