Default rear end installation

i have a 98 mustang with stock rear end...

i also have 4.10 gears, anda posi differential and 4 spacer lookingthings (2 at about 1/4" and 2 at about 1/2")from a 96 i got from a friend...

the only shop around here that has the correct installation "tools" wants $300 to install the gears...

is this something i can do myself, and save $300?

it can be done. but i wouldn't suggest it. it took me mutitple times to get mine correct because it was my first time and i still have a slight whine.(but they were used gears though).

a press or a home made press. like a vice. a shim pack, gear paint. alot of research of the grove pattern and patience becuase you'll be taking the bearings off alot...... at least i had to. i messed up a trac lok when i did mine but thank god my friend gave me his gears and traction lock, because he wrecked his rear end and bought a new one

just let the shop do it. The fact that you have to ask what it takes to do it, means you dont have what it takes..

Ive done a few rear ends and im still having mine professionally done.

It's not an easy job for a beginer, I'm not saying it's not possible. I've done a few myself and it can be very frustrating to get it right.

thats not necessaryily tru^^^...depends on how u drive, where u drive, and what u want the car to be like...there is no rule saying 4.10s cant go in with a 5spd...that said..if this is ur daily and u commute 90 miles or whatever a day sure id probably not put the 4.10s in..but if its a fun car, doesnt see highway all the time but occasionally..sure 4.10s are a blast..but id recommend some good tires n maybe some suspension cuz first gear doesnt even hook in mine with 3.73s...4.10s would be like i just removed 1st alltogether...but it would be fun lol...
