More than likely its a corroded wire or a bad sensor. Only way to truely find out is to deploy the bag. You can take it to the dealer and have them chek it out. They have tools that can determine what is at fault (similar to ODB II). That would eb the safest thing to do. And no a blinking light does not mean it will blow up in your face.

when you took out the bulb did the blue box behind the radio ever start beeping ?

holy schnikies! Can you tell me more about this mythical blue box you speak of....My airbag light has been blinking and i figured it was just the clock spring and I'll get to it....eventually.... But one time I heard a beeping coming from what seemed to be the radio and I had no idea WTF it was and I was pretty much ready for self-destruction!

I hardly drove it at the time (and now its in pieces in the garage) so I don't know if it would have happened more than once

it was a bad clock spring. i replaced it today. thanks for the help
