gt-40 head/intake removal
I went to the junkyard yesterday armed with some hand tools and very little knowledge. I found an explorer with the gt-40 heads and intake still in tact, unfortunately i didn't know what i was doing and couldn't finish in time.
have some questions:
1. Do you have to take the roller rockers/pushrods out before removing the heads?
2. Is there something else you need to remove besides the bolts and the thing the coolant line's connected to on the lower intake manifold? I couldn't get that thing to budge at all, i think something's still connected.
3. I think i stripped the threads on the intake bolt that's on the passenger side closest to the firewall; it turns but it's not coming up... Am i screwed here?

3)you have have just broke the head off the bolt . try and grab it with some pliers or vice grips and pull it out
2)i think its 8 intake bolts on the lower, remove temp sending line, coolant lines and that should be about it.sometime you need to give it a little smack with a hammer and block of wood or rubber mallet
1)to remove heads it makes life easier. remove rockers and pushrods. undo the head bolts and you got yourself some gt40's

1. You can leave the rockers bolted up. When you pull the heads off the pushrods may go everywhere, but who cares?
2. Just cut the rubber coolant lines. Leave that coolant thing to the lower hooked up. It goes to the heater.
3. The bolt that bolts the lower to the head? If so you have to get it out somehow. It prolly just the bolt that is bad. Pull on it with vise grips or something.

I'd rather see you try and lift it off with a bigger pry bar, than see you try to beat it off with a hammer. Make sure all bolts are out and free and it will come off with some mild persuasion of a pry bar. Be careful beating on it with the hammer.
