Broke my car at the track today...

Engineering intelligence is something that has been escaping automobile builders gradually for years. Look at todays cars. Can't work on 'em unless you're an electrician, engineer, and auto tech.

Actually, putting the gear on the shaft with a roll pin IS the intelligent thing to do. Otherwise, how would you dismantle the unit to replace a failed PIP?
The distributor gear is considered a "sacrificial" part. Meaning, the reason why you run X gear with Y cam is because the gear is usually made of a softer metal. I'd rather replace at $40 gear that I can change in 15 minutes, than a $400 cam that requires me to dismantle the entire engine.

^^ Exactly. There has to be a weak point somewhere and that might as well be at the cheaper part than somewhere else. Everyone wants a complete bullit proof engine but if something breaks on that motor then there will be some money spent.

My distributor had built up some sludge in it from years of oil being coked in there.. That combined with the HV oil pump, and the disty just being old in general. **** happens.

Holes on gear will align but one way. 180 out and will not see daylight. Always marked shaft and gear when exchanging pip. New gear comes with one hole. Align and drill to make other hole. Ford, got to love it.
