mine took a long time too, I just turned it past the stop then pushed the pedal to the floor then pried the hell out of it till it came off.

This is gonna sound stupid, but....
If you remove the driver's seat (4 bolts and a wire), you can lay down on your back where the seat was, and it will be much easier to see WTF is going on under the dash.
And yes, that small piece is a bitch. [:@] I broke mine taking it off too

oh my god...I wouldnt wish that on anyone...what a huge pain in the ****...ended up going thru the firewall with a small saw, cut a notch and broke it with a long flat screwdriver and a mallet...everything's back together...just need to adjust it a bit this week...
