Default Crankshaft Balancing

If a crank, lets say a stock 5.0, is externally balanced from the factory at 50 oz, can it be made into a neutrally balanced crank? I completely understand how balancing works blah blah blah. Probe says my crankshaft is set up for an external balance, but its a brand new crankshaft and has not been balanced. So shouldn't I be able to internally balance a brand new crank?

Yes you can balance external cranks internally you just need the correct balancer and plate/wheel.

The thing on internal balancing is that the balancer and plate/wheel has no imbalance such as 50oz or 28oz etc, the internal balance consist of drilling the counter weights just like external balancing only difference is internal they press in heavier metal to add weight in the front and back counter weights in the spots they drill, on the external they just drill out weight and thats it and after every drilling and or press-in weight they spun it up to see if any weight has moved that is the reason for multiple holes in the counter weight.

The metal used to balance is specific and costly that is why its usually about double the money to internally balance an engine, some you just cant help like the 4.6/5.4s and most all smallblock chevy engine...

As far as performance gains like you stated in a street engine its a null point, in a all out competition engine especially in ruled classes you can use it to get a few ponies in higher rpm engines!
