67' Coupe: How to remove the steering column?
Hi all,
I'm fabricating my dash right now and it would help a lot of I didn't have the steering column in the way. Hoping there was any number of joints at the base of it I unbolted the U bracket under the dash to drop it down and out of the way, but discovered that I had no such luck. I didn't get too deep into it and my Chilton has nil on the topic, but what is the simplest way (hopefully without replacing any bearings) to get the steering column either removed or sitting on the floor?

I have a 67' Sport Sprint Edition, so I'm assuming late 67' as it was the model where the incorporated parts from the 68' into the design. Or so I've read.
That said, this car is by no means stock and I have found several conflicting parts on the car. I pulled the outer steering column off and now there is just the shaft which is approximately a 1" solid steel rod. Where it connects to the steering box it seems to simply go right in with no rag joint and only a fairly large (and thin) nut around the shaft itself.
Any help is appreciated.

I can work around it if I have to, but unless it's more than an hour of work I'd just assume take out the steering box.
I don't really need to remove it. If I take out the 3 mounting bolts, is there enough slack to lay it on the floor, or would I also need to disconnect the steering linkage?
I just need to get it out of the way of the dash so I can fabricate it. I've been looking at the tilt wheel columns as a replacement. The one's I've found are in the $600-$700 range and I'm just not sure it's worth the money to me to be able to tilt it.

If you have no rag joint, remove the steering wheel, disconnect the TS plug, remove the two nuts and U strap at the bottom edge of the dash, and slide the column off.
To remove the gearbox, remove the driver's seat, remove the LH valve cover and LH cowl to shock brace (or export brace), the #7 and #8 spark plugs. Disconnect the pittman arm from the gearbox, remove the 3 retaining bolts, lift the box between the shock tower and engine and slide it out.
If you have power brakes and/or a 390 engine, good luck, you just added a whole weekend to getting this out.
