I am also looking to upgrade my audio system. I have a standard unit, non shaker system and do not have SYNC. What I do want is a nav system with phone interface that will work with the car. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I did a writeup on how to install a nav system in our cars, pretty similar for 05-14, i know, I have done both. Once you pick what sound system you want just follow along, and ask questions if you have them.
as for actual sound systems, I have had luck with pioneer, but I have also had people almost get mad at me for getting a pioneer, so it is really just personal choice.

Kenwood has a new system complete. I got a pair of 3-way's for the rear of my 2012 base.
Model no. KFC-C6894PS 6x8 80 rms, 240 watt peak power. They really helped a lot. Did the install myself.
