17'' wheels on 65
I want to put 17'' wheels on my 1965 mustang but I cannot decide what size and backspacing is the best fit. Should I go with 17x8 4.5bs on all four with 225/45/17 tires, someone told me that 17x8 on front doesn't fit 1965-1966 very well and 17x7 is a perfect fit. OR should I get 17x7 front 4.0''bs and 215/45/17 tires and 17x8 4.5''bs in back with 225/45/17 tires? I plan on lowering 1'' all the way around, I would like to run a 235/45/17 tire back and a 225/45/17 tire in front but I don't want rubbing and I don't want to roll fenders. I want to buy charcoal TT style wheels from Customwheelsmarket.com, are these wheels good quality, has anyone bought from them? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/17-17...Q5fAccessories

I'm using 99-04 Bullitt wheels (17 X 8) with 5.72" backspace on my 65. I have 225/45 17 on front and 245/45 17 on the back. I have 1" spacers on the front and an Explorer rear end (2" wider than stock, so same as 1" spacers). Wheels fit well but could be 1/2" more in on front (perfect on back).
Ideallly, if you are buying aftermarket wheels, 4.25" backspace on front (with 8" wheel) is about perfect and 4.5" to 4.75 on back (with no spacers). BUT I have aftermarket A-arms on front. You might have clearance problems with an 8" wheel and 4.25" backspace with stock A-arms, so a 7" wheel might be better.
225/45 tires on a 17" rim is a good fit for the front. 245/45 17 is good on the back.

I am running 225/45/17 with 4.5 backspacing up front no problems but I do have the fenders rolled and shelby drop. I had 235/45 not rolled and no drop and the fenders cut the wheels on turns and bumps. So I changed to 224 after I rolled the fenders and after the drop. Don't know if the 225/45 will work with out rolling the fenders. Oh my rims up front are 17x8, they say I should of got a bigger offset if I didn't want to roll the fenders. They say 17- 7 are ideal for 65-66.

If you want 17x8's and don't want to worry about rubbing or rolling fender lips, I would suggest 4.75" backspacing. That's what I have on the rear of my 65 with 245/45 tires. Even at that, my rear axle was a little off-center and caused one tire to rub. I had to adjust my rear axle to get it centered to stop it from rubbing. I have 17x7's with 4.25" backspace and 215 tires on the front without any clearance issues and my front is pretty low.
I think 4.5" backspacing on an 8" wheel is cutting it close on a 65-66 car if you don't want to worry about rubbing. I know some have done it without issues, but based on the way my wheels fit my car I'm glad I went with 4.75" backspacing.
