Default 66 Mustang won't idle

I just rebuilt the top half of my 1966 289 4v engine and restored the entire engine compartment. Heads were completely rebuilt, I didnt touch the cam or lifters other than adjusting the rockers after installing the heads. The Edelbrock 289 performer intake is new. The Edelbrock 1406 carb was new last year and the car ran good. Now the car starts ok, then misses and dies. Sometimes it backfires out the carb and flames! The timing is good, yes I had the distributor out but I marked it first and managed to get the timing light on it (with help from a friend) and timing is ok now. Intake gaskets don't look like they moved when I torqued it. I made sure I had the correct gaskets, not permatorqe, the printoseal type. Carb gaskets are ok, one between spacer/carb and spacer/manifold. Any ideas? (I'm still having fun though).

Do you smell fuel after this happens? Carb Float may be flooding the intake or your needle seat needs to be replaced/cleaned.
