Default New alternator size for a '68

My friends alternator in his '68 died. Which isn't so horrible because it was only a 44 amp and we've been considering bigger for awhile. We've added a few extra bells and whistles (mostly radio and fog lights) any who not that thats a whole lot of extra power draw, but he was hoping for an electirc fan this summer and maybe a small amp for the speakers. So I was wondering how much larger of an alternator can we put on without over loading the car's wiring (which is factory, or close to factory with the hack job here and there).

Thanks,
Scott

There are only a few with an external voltage regulator and I don't believe these are very powerful. The internal voltage regulator ones can be adapted. depends on which you have. If yours is a external voltage regulator , go to a generator/alternator repair/sales store, and make a friend. (yellow pages) .
Either one will only supply 12 volts to your battery, it's the amps that your looking at, if you have a 30 amp battery and a 100 amp alternator your regulator is going to get a work out.
The electrical systems are just that SYSTEMs.
